Ballast Water Management Convention (IC BWM-2004)

From date of entry into force, the Ballast Water Management Convention (IC BWM-2004) on September 8th 2017, all ships shall have and implement a BWM plan and record all ballast water operations in the BWM record book. The BWM plan shall be approved by the administration.

Under the Convention, all ships in international traffic are required to manage their ballast water and sediments to a certain standard, according to a ship-specific Ballast Water management Plan. All ships have to carry a ballast water record book and an international ballast water management certificate.
